get outdoors!

Well, this May 2 4 weekend has been splendidly sunny and fabulously warm! I hope you’ve had the chance to take advantage of it, whether sitting on a patio with a cold drink and friends, or out enjoying the the greenness that has bloomed all around us. It’s been a great few days to get up close and take a good look at nature.

Some new people that I saw in a couple of alleys this week;

below: And now for the men. Back in April I posted a few photos from this location, at the end of Cyril Lane and running behind the north side of College Street just east of Borden. The cartoon like mural on the wall of the Kaisar Guesthouse (to the right) was there then. The other faces are newer additions.

Flowers, a sign of spring. No real flowers outside yet and probably not for quite a while!
Instead we’ll have to settle for European pottery florals from the Gardiner Museum today.

around the bakery

The Ontario Bread Company is located near Dundas and Ossington.
It had an Ossington Ave address but it is surrounded by lanes.
In September of 2013 it went out of business. The building is still there but it is empty.

Lovebot is now on their mailbox!

The bakery was founded in 1935 by Polish immigrants and they specialized in Polish, and other Eastern European, breads. BlogTO did an interesting piece about the bakery in August 2013.

There is a lumber yard adjacent to the bakery on the same lane.
What follows are some of the photos that I took as I walked the “block” of lanes around the bakery and the lumber yard. Some of the graffiti has been there for a few years.

This pair stands under the shower in a quiet corner.

Rob Ford may no longer be mayor, but his legacy lives on …. in the form of anti-Ford graffiti.

This piece is on Rolyat Street, just north of the Ontario Bread Co.

The last two pieces of street art are in a neighbouring lane, just to the northwest.

Centennial Park conservatory

I ventured out to Etobicoke because I heard that Centennial Park had a conservatory and I was curious about what was there. Taking photos of flowers and plants is not my forte but it was an interesting place to experiment with colour, texture and composition. I do not know the names of most of the plants that I saw there, and very few were labelled. There were geraniums, anthuriums (red & white), bougainvillea, bamboo, lots of different cacti and succulents, to name a few. The photos below represent only a sample of what was growing there today.

dyke march – the befores

Getting ready, or waiting, for the Dyke March. Saturday 28th June, from Allan Gardens west to Yonge St then north to Charles St. It was a very warm and sunny day.

I bought a flag.

Two guys are sitting on the sidewalk. One has dyed his hair yellow and he's carrying a rainbow flag. The other is resting his chin on his hands, and his elbows on his knees. He has his rainbow flag draped over his head and he looks very bored.

It was a hot day and the parade was late getting started…….

I spoke briefly to a woman who was wearing this bracelet. One of the women she was with was wearing a sticker that said, “Eat Me, I’m Kosher” but I didn’t take a picture of it.

I am beginning to wonder how many bridges there are in Toronto! Yesterday I walked under three that I hadn’t been under before. These are the photos from one of those bridges – Bathurst Street over Cedarvale Park, just north of St. Clair Ave.
