Instead of pictures of this year’s Pride Parade, I am posting some photos from previous Pride weekends from my archives. I have tried to use pictures that weren’t chosen for prior blog posts. As you know, the fall out from Covid-19 includes cancellation of parades in Toronto this summer. There was a virtual Pride parade online this year (so I hear) but that doesn’t lend itself to photography. We miss the social interactions that normally occur. We miss the atmosphere and the fun. This collection is a poor substitute for the real thing but maybe it will bring back a few memories….. See you in 2021!

Sonya remade and rejuvenated

Close to Kensington market is a small park called Sonya Parkette. Two of the sides of the park are walls. A few years ago the walls were painted with historical murals that were subsequently tagged over. More recently, the park has undergone some renovations including new murals on the walls.
Many of the murals are by P.S (aka Phillip Saunders). If you are familiar with some of the graffiti and street art in the Kensington area, you will recognize the style.
below: This mural, and the one below, are obviously by the same artist who painted the two murals of naked women in Milky Way.

The Kensington area has a problem with taggers – many street art pieces get vandalized. Let’s hope that these don’t suffer that fate.
milky way revisited

Sometimes graffiti and street art have a short life span. Many taggers don’t care about what they are tagging over. Street art can also be “interactive” in that stickers and paste ups can get “added” to a piece. Anyone with a marker can have their say. On the bright side, new murals get painted and new paste -ups appear. And that is why I go back to the my favorite alleys every once in a while. This morning I walked the Milky Way again.
below: The Parkdale mural by Race Williams is still looking good.
below: The naked women are a bit more modestly dressed than they once were .
The most noticeable change is the fact that many pieces are now at least partially covered by greenery – small shrubs and tall weeds have proliferated and are looking quite healthy.
below: This lion is looking more and more like the king of the jungle even as the words faded and peel.
below: The small aliens at the top of the building are now in the shade of a fast growing tree.
below: And the larger aliens on the fence really need a hair cut now.
below: A large pink peony (at least that’s what it looks like)

ladies and gentlemen

Some new people that I saw in a couple of alleys this week;
Ladies in the Milky Way and gentlemen behind College Street.
below: Six naked women can now be found in the Milky Way
below: And now for the men. Back in April I posted a few photos from this location, at the end of Cyril Lane and running behind the north side of College Street just east of Borden. The cartoon like mural on the wall of the Kaisar Guesthouse (to the right) was there then. The other faces are newer additions.
Tower Automotive building

The Tower Automotive building is on Sterling Ave. in the Junction. This ten storey building was built in the 1920s. Tower Automotive went bankrupt in 2005 and the building has been empty ever since. A number of years ago there was talk of turning it into studio space but for a temporary art installation or two, nothing has been done with this heritage building.
….. but part of the fence was down and nobody was working on the site, so in we went.
