… and a few things more from TMU Image Centre exhibits.

First, the main gallery of the Image Centre is showing a collection of the work of Clara Gutsche, winner of the 2024 ScotiabankCONTACT Photography award.  One of her series features photos of Quebec nuns, “The Convent Series”, taken before 1999.   Hence “nuns” in my title –   The “weddings” in the title comes from another exhibit here – a collection of portraits of brides and grooms over the years.

There are other series of her work also on view including some taken inside a Catholic high school.

This is only a small sample of Gutsche’s work.  You can see more at the Image Centre until 2nd August 2025 – The originals look better than my copies!!

 

Let’s move on to the happy couples….

“Something Old; Something New – The Wedding Photography Collection of Stephen Bulger and Catherine Lash” is  the full title of the exhibit.  The title says it all.  The exhibit gives a glimpse into the history of photography and the techniques used to produce images.  It also takes a look at a sliver of social history… especially with respect to clothing styles.  All the photos were donated to the Image Centre by Bulger and Lash in 2023.

This used to be Yonge Dundas Square (photo below) – soon it will be Sankofa Square. Or at least I think that’s what’s happening as there was some controversy over the name change. Although the name Yonge Dundas is very dull and unimaginative, that is what we’ve become accustomed to calling it. Some of us still claim that the Leafs play at the ACC or that the Blue Jays call the SkyDome home – yeah, we can be rather slow!

Whatever its name, that intersection is usually a colourful place on a summer evening.

So that is where I started walking late in the afternoon the other day.  The walk was rather meandering, and did include a quick hop on a streetcar or two.  The weather was perfect and the streets were alive.  It was nice to see so many people out enjoying the evening.  Many (all?) of the curbside patios were busy too.

Run Like a Diva,
5 km run and a half marathon in the Port Lands.

1700 people ran the 5K event and almost as many (I think) ran the half marathon.

The original plan was to hold this event on the Toronto Islands but with this spring’s flooding, the run was moved to the mainland.   It was a charity event in support of Rethink Breast Cancer.

This past weekend was the 5th annual Bloor Yorkville Icefest.
It’s an event that features ice sculptures in the park at Cumberland and Bellair.

The theme this year was Canada 150, as 2017 is Canada’s 150th birthday.

We take selfies, lots of selfies.

I watched a family struggle to take a selfie of the four of them that they were all happy with.  I offered to take their picture for them.  Simultaneously, the husband said “no thanks” and the wife handed me the phone and said “We’d love that”.  The husband rolled his eyes a bit and remarked on how useless selfies were but how we seemed to need to take them.   This post is dedicated to him.

I’m one too

As you walk east on Wellesley towards Church St., you can’t miss the large mural on the side of Ho’s Team Barber and Hairstylist.  The red circle with it’s white words “I’m One Too” catch your attention.   The mural, by Will Craddock, is part of the Church Street Mural Project.

There is actually a small lane that runs beside the button mural.  If you walk a little but down that lane and then look at the wall on the other side, you will see another artwork from the Church Street Mural Project.  ‘Kiss and Tell’ by Natalie Wood is a series of silhouette couples with their heads close together, either talking or kissing.
