We’re getting outside to enjoy the summer while still maintaining some distance as the COVID numbers drop… a few of the restrictions have been lifted and life is little less constrained. Patios are filling up again and a larger selection of stores are open. The following photos were taken downtown on a sunny day a week or so ago…. as I re-learn how to take candid shots of people!

Initiated in 2017, the “Bridges to Art” program envisions murals on nine underpasses in Toronto’s east end. Several of the murals along the Carlaw-Dundas corridor have been painted including this one on Jones Avenue just north of Gerrard. It was painted by Jason Pinney and features scenes from the east end.

This weekend saw the temperatures rise high enough draw people outside. A lot of the snow melted and there was hope in the air – hope that winter won’t last too much longer. This being Canada, winter can last as long as it wants!… And that’s often into April. In the meantime, it was great to enjoy the weekend.

in the heat of the summer

The summer of the heat continues into August. It’s still hot and humid. But it was also the long August weekend, Simcoe Day or something like that, so there was lots happening around the city.
I went searching for breezes and I walked on the shady side of the street as much as possible, often as the drops of sweat ran down my back. A few stops in air conditioned stores (indoor window shopping) and a cold drink break or two made the days bearable. It helped that, as usual, there was lots to see!

below: Sitting in the painted window, Graffiti Alley. It looked like they were filming a music video. I’m not too sure what they thought of me (I didn’t think that I was disturbing them, long lens used).

below: An old mattress and head board lean against the side of a house. Great juxtaposition here as the mural is called ‘Lust’
below: Jelly window on Queen West – What is a modern doughnut? Especially one spelled the old fashioned way? The store was closed, so it’s still a mystery. Beautiful painting on the door.
below: Cycling in the jungle. I say ‘jungle’ because I see the lion and think “King of the jungle” but lions don’t live in the jungle so maybe I need to rethink that caption. Cyclist as prey? Bikes on safari?
below: Prince is now at Kensington Market. A purple Prince.
below: Graffiti in Kensington. Frowning while watching them fight. Little black figures with rifles. Are they angels that are shooting back or devils?
below: More violence. What happens when you pull this pin?

below: Lots of wires.
below: Reflections and lots of stuff including the painted lady in the House of Energy, Augusta Avenue. Life.
below: Death. How many skulls in the window?
below: Lots of smiles
I’ll be smiling more once the temperatures cool. I think that it’s been hot long enough that I can complain about it – perhaps even long for winter? How Canadian of me! In the meantime, as long as there is shade I’ll keep walking (and sweating!).

Last weekend
This weekend
I hope that you all had a great weekend! It was fabulous to be out and about enjoying the warm weather – everyone is happier when the sun shines and the snow melts! The following pictures were taken today when I was out walking along Queen West, people watching as I went.
below: Street artist SKAM and his graffiti tag. The original was painted in 2012 and had not been tagged over or messed up too much. Some of the paint was peeling so it was time for a make over.
below: Part of the latest Uber5000 mural is reflected in the window as SKAM paints.
below: Trinity Bellwoods Park (This is also where the ‘believe’ in yellow is woven into the chainlink fence – photo above).

laid back catching rays

Yesterday afternoon was perfect for a stroll along the boardwalk. I hadn’t been in that part of the city since the flooding occurred earlier in the spring. The lake levels are still high but that doesn’t prevent people from enjoying the sun and sand.
below: Party time behind the fence! This scene caught my eye because of the positioning of the chairs behind the fence (part of the beach is closed after the flooding). It wasn’t until I looked at the picture on my computer that I saw the LCBO bag between two of the chairs and the can of Palm Bay on one of arm rests.
below: The lifeguards are now manning some of the stations. Because of the flooding, there is a pool behind the lifeguard where there was once beach.
below: The remnants of sandbags ebb and flow with the waves. Grounded. Just enough sand to keep them from floating away.
below: The high water levels have encroached on the dog park.
below: Look! An aerial view of Stonehenge! LOL. And with that smile (I hope!)… and with sand between my toes and in my sandals, I’ll leave you for another day.
