Nuit Blanche 2018

This year’s Nuit Blanche was on September 28th and 29th.  The night’s activities were spread over a large number of locations around the city.  That was a few days ago so yes, I am a bit behind.  I was laid low for a couple of days with this cold that’s been going around… or I took a few days to recover from being up until 3:30 a.m.!

below: This is what you saw when you first got off the subway (is the SRT a subway?) at Scarborough Town Centre.  It’s part of the ‘The Things They Carried’ Babel series.  The motifs are similar to those on the installation at Yonge -Dundas Square, that oops, I don’t have a picture of.

below: Trash at Yonge Dundas Square.  Nothing to do with Nuit Blanche, just an ordinary day’s worth of garbage.  It just happened to catch my eye as I was walking down the stairs to the subway.

Ending with rubbish would be a weird way to end a post, so here’s another mannequin.  I saw lots of them that night too, unfazed by the activity around them, unmoved by the night’s events.

Uber5000 is almost finished a new mural in Graffiti Alley!

below: The mural is loosely based on Nathan Phillips Square in the winter time.   See that Toronto sign?  It has been painted with glow in the dark paint.  Apparently, UV lights are going to be installed to illuminate the sign at night.  Something to check out in the near future!

I missed Nuit Blanch this year.  While I was away, I heard lots of good things about the installations at Nathan Phillips Square, including the fact that they will remain until the 10th of October.

Silly me went during the day.  It didn’t look too impressive then!
There were lots of tourists taking pictures.

Oh right, it’s a night time, after dark sort of thing.  Come back after 7 p.m.

So last night I went back at 7 p.m.  …. but last night was also the first game of the Blue Jays playoff series against Texas and it was playing on a large screen in the square.  I watched the end of the game.  There wasn’t a very large turnout, but the atmosphere was great.  Everybody was in a good mood as the Blue Jays won 10 – 1.

Shortly after the end of the game, the large 14 metre globe that represents the sun lit up.  “Death of the Sun” by Director X (Julien Lutz) began.

The sun starts as a swirling orange and yellow globe.

It then turns orange before the colours die out and fade to nothing.

At one point the sun lets off steam, gas, fog (whatever you want to call it) before it goes silent.

The end of the sun signals the start of “Pneuma”.  Images by Floria Sigismondi were projected onto a wall of water under the arches in the square in what appears to be a short film full of  symbols.

‘Oblivion’ is the name given to the collection of installations at City Hall.  Both of the artists come from the world of video.  Sigismondi has previously made videos for the like of Rihanna, David Bowie and Marilyn Manson while Director X has worked with Rihanna and Drake.

It was an interesting installation….  well done technically and fascinating to watch.

Nathan Phillips Square on a sunny long week-end

This year the long August week-end (Aug 3, 4 and 5) was warm and sunny.  Like most summer week-ends in Toronto, there was lots going on.  On both Sunday and Monday afternoon I dropped by the IRIE festival at Nathan Phillips Square.

There was a small but appreciative crowd at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday afternoon for the IRIE festival.

They were called the TD dancers and they were one of the opening acts on Monday afternoon.

There were not a lot of cameras clicking away during the performances that I saw. One exception were the four men with their long lenses that stopped by for a few minutes, took some photos, and left.  I thought of African safaris as I watched them.

There were also a few vendors selling food & drink, clothing, and jewelry.  Mostly it was a pleasant way to spend some time on a sunny summer afternoon.
