‘Room for Mystics’
An exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario by Sandra Meigs and Christopher Butterfield.

Scattered around the room are bright coloured, simple paintings that are displayed back to back.  Banners with concentric yellow circles hang on the walls.  The solid colour boxes beside the paintings hide speakers.

A large red mobile hangs from the ceiling, happiness with closed eyes.  Happiness and joy are two of the emotions that this room evokes.  Walking through the room is definitely a positive experience!  You can’t help but smile.

The paintings and mobile are the work of Sandra Meigs, a Canadian artist based in British Columbia.   Accompanying the exhibit is a ‘sound installation’ composed by Christopher Butterfield.

I found myself on a sunny Friday afternoon with time to spare.  I haven’t walked Graffiti Alley in the warmth for quite a few months so off we went, hunting for new things, forgotten things, and special ‘are they still there?’ things.

Nice of you to ask, I’m feeling fine thank you very much.  But I think the little man in the top corner is feeling angry.

Right below little angry smoker is a tiny tbonez character, masked ninja, from the Urban Ninja Squadron.  These little ninja guys are popping up all over.

below: Feeling perplexed.  Me that is, not sure about how this guy feels although I get the impression he wants some milk, otherwise he’s a mystery.   Sometimes I wonder what goes through the heads of mural artists.

Cranes and construction hoardings, not much new there.

below: On Dundas East, as part of the ongoing Regent Park revitalization project, there is another crane over another construction site.  The hoardings around this project feature paintings by two street artists, birdo and getso.

below: These pictures were taken back in September.  The hoardings are in a covered pedestrian walkway so they are in a shaded area.  The railings make it unsafe to stand in the street to take close up photos, or at least I didn’t feel too safe the morning I was there.
